Symposium - Film Collaboration

I chose to work with Andrew to help make his film "Kayla and Kyle" a film about a young Trans man who is distant from his mother, and must dress as the gender he was assigned at birth in order to get money to live off of. He then finds that someone he cares a lot about is ill and he must decide whether or not to disclose his Trans status.

I decided to work on this film because I am involved in a lot of work with LGBT+ movements, and there are virtually no representations of Trans people on the screen, so working on this film was an opportunity to help with creating visibility around these stories, stories that are seldom told but experienced by many.

I was assigned role of Production Designer, and it was my job to oversee the visual side of the film.

The first thing i decided creatively was the colour of the film.

What was interesting about this script was the potential for its relationship to colour. Kyle is happy in his new life (despite lack of funds) but has to go back to harmful gender stereotypes that  do not match him (pink) in order to be able to live comfortably.

I decided that Kyle's Flat at the beginning of the film ould be a calm place, with earth tones and calm greys, a departure from misgendered life, and entering into something that is far more natural to him.

As he dresses in his old clothes, and returns to his mum's house, the closer he gets to the house (the bus, the driveway) the more colour comes into the film. The colour isnt natural, its kind of sickly. Its at its fullest when Kyle is in Rose's (his mother's) house.
